At Lomakivi, sustainability does not mean a single act. It shows in how the old farm environment is respected, what we procure, how we use energy and water, and how we take care of people, animals and the surrounding nature.
We take part in Visit Finland’s Sustainable Travel Finland programme and in Hostelling International’s HI-Q&S quality and sustainability system.

At Lomakivi we strive to reduce the environmental impact of accommodation operations through small and larger everyday choices. We use ECO energy, energy-saving and LED lighting, and water-saving taps, showers and toilets. Washing and cleaning products and paper products are eco-labelled, and waste is sorted in accordance with municipal waste management regulations.
The farm’s own practices also support circularity: horse manure and compost waste are used in field cultivation, and the fields grow, among other things, organic hay and oats. In construction and in the design of the accommodation buildings, the traditions of the old farm environment have been respected.

In our procurement we favour Finnish and locally produced ingredients and local suppliers whenever possible. Locality shows especially in Lomakivi’s food service, which makes use of seasonal products, ingredients from nearby producers, and berries and other products from our own garden and the nearby forests.
One good example is Lomakivi’s certified artisan food, lusikkaleivät (spoon-shaped shortbread cookies). They use Finnish and locally produced ingredients, and they are made by hand with as few additives as possible.

Lomakivi is part of Hostelling International’s international network, whose aim is to increase understanding between people, social interaction and the exchange of experiences. Everyone is welcome here regardless of background, age, language or other personal characteristics.
We are a family business that wants to be part of the local community. We support local business and services as well as youth and senior hobby activities. The Lomatalli stable also provides a learning environment for equine students, adult work rehabilitees and immigrants.

Lomakivi is located in an environment whose nature we want to look after for future generations too. We take part in the Helmi environmental programme, which strengthens Finland’s biodiversity and aims to protect and restore valuable habitats and help endangered species adapt to a changing climate.
Kuoppasuonlahti bay, located near Lomakivi’s fields, is an important nesting area for waterbirds. Nature management work has been carried out in the area to improve the birds’ opportunities to use the shoreline habitat. Nature is constantly changing and living – sometimes plans change along with it.
Nature does not always follow human plans. After the nature management work at Kuoppasuonlahti, a pair of bitterns decided to change scenery. Since then, among others, a pair of oystercatchers has nested in the area, and a pair of ravens also visits the field daily.
